Michaela Rýgrová: Sustainability- what does that really mean?

An introductory perspective on sustainability and its three main pillars (social, economic and environmental). The first part of the module will introduce sustainability as a complex issue that goes far beyond the boundaries of „recycling“. It will clarify some of the concepts such as doughnut economics or circular economy, SDG, ESG, carbon footprint vs. climate shadow or carbon neutrality. In sum, the presentation will provide a non-exhaustive explanation of basic concepts and knowledge from verified sources.

Zuzana Bieliková: Sustainability & Audiovisual sector

How is the topic of sustainability prescribed in the audiovisual sector? The lecture will focus on the impact of the audiovisual sector on the planet and its inhabitants, explain the possible measures that can be taken to improve the current state and principles governing sustainable film production, and also introduce the systemic and legislative context of the Czech and Slovak film environment.

Dietlind Rott: The steps forward, system change perspective

The third part of the module will approach the topic of transformation of the film industry on a systemic basis. It will introduce the role of eco consultants or greenrunners within greeneen film productions, and use examples from practice to show the transformation of audiovisual at the level of multinational production set or state film funds.

Michaela Rýgrová: expert on sustainability in the creative industries, mainly theater and audiovisual. He teaches on this topic at DAMU and FAMU and at the same time works in the platform for sustainable audiovisual in the Czech context Greenfilming.cz.

Zuzana Bielikova: producer and manager of the Slovak Film Agency. She has been developing the topic of sustainable audiovisual in Slovakia for a long time, participated in the development of the Green Platform and the preparation of the European carbon calculator Eureca.

Dietlind Rott: CEO of the Lower Austria Film Commission and Evergreen Prisma. He is constantly advocating for system-based changes within the Austrian audiovisual sector and the development of a network of eco-consultants for sustainable filming.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain knowledge of the fundamental data regarding climate and the role the audio-visual sector plays in it. Further, the students will understand some of the implementable measures and solutions from examples of best practices from local and foreign contexts and will learn about some of the ways environmental impacts of Film and TV production can be tracked.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Credit will be awarded for active participation in all 3 parts of the seminar, completion of the written assignment and completion of the feedback questionnaire.

Written assignment:

Write a summary or comment on the topics of 3 lectures and discussions in a total of 2 pages.

Note

The subject will be taught in English and is part of the range of optional subjects for the entire AMU.
