Obsah

Introduction to colour grading in the context of the cinematographer’s work. Introduction to DaVinci Resolve, practical examples. Basic workflow — importing original camera data and edit lists, grading and final export.

Theoretical lectures combined with immediate practical demonstrations on various sample data from a variety of digital camera sources as well as film scans.

Topics:

  1. Introduction to colour grading. Digital Cinema Laboratory — Rules of use. Workplace Configuration — Computer, Storage, Desktop Monitor, Reference Monitor.
  2. Project Settings — Master Project Settings. Optimized media, Render Cache, Proxies (theory)
  3. DaVinci Resolve User Interface — Media, Edit, Colour, Deliver. Media — Import of camera data or scans, metadata, footage organisation. Optimized media (practically)
  4. Colour — primary corrections — tools (lift, gamma, gain, contrast, saturation, hue, colour temperature, tint), basic procedure. Waveform and vectorscope, output blanking. Render Cache, Proxies (practically)
  5. Nodal structure of correction (serial nodes). Clip Nodes, Timeline Nodes, Node Order, Keyframes, Correction copying. Grab still, Reference wipe.
  6. Keys and selections — HSL key, 3D key, practise
  7. Power windows and their animation using keyframes, practise
  8. Tracking, interaction of windows and keys, practise
  9. Edit — Timeline and its basics, video tracks, basic editing tools. Conforming.
  10. Deliver — Export, export parameters, export accuracy tests

Výsledky učení

Understanding elementary principals of digital colour grading. Students will be able to conform, grade and deliver (export) any of their exercises in line with FAMU screening requirements.

Předpoklady a další požadavky

A prerequisite for the course is a general knowledge of digital film technology and digital workflow. Elementary knowledge of colour theory is an advantage.

Hodnoticí metody a kritéria

80% attendance, actively taking part in classes and demonstrating all the learned colour grading techniques on sample data or on ones own exercise. The student will present finished grading of an exercise shot in the current semester. Namely: the working procedure, primary and secondary colour corrections and correct project and export settings for given deliverables, all in the DaVinci Resolve environment.
