Obsah

The course focuses on advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in digital image data processing, from image acquisition to post-production and distribution.

The emphasis is mainly on practical exercises and experiments with subsequent evaluation and comparison of different approaches, e.g. ProRes 444 vs. RAW, REC.709 vs. Log, traditional workflow vs. ACES workflow.

The course includes an introduction and basic hands-on experience with tools and software for on-set live-grade, digital dailies, color grading, DCP mastering, projector and monitor calibration.

The whole area is viewed from the perspective of the cinematographer, who can then assess the chosen workflow and be able to communicate with other production participants, make recommendations and decisions with regard to the final quality of the work and production costs.

Topics

  1. Recapitulation of basic concepts - colour space, gamut, RAW, codecs, REC709, REC2020, P3, XYZ, SDR, HDR, gamma, EOTF, OETF, PQ, HLG.
  2. Overall view of digital workflow - pre-production, shooting, post production and vfx, distribution. The importance of colour management, defining the critical stages from a cinematographer's perspective to maintain colour consistency. Recapitulation of Color Management.
  3. Color LUT, 3D LUT. Creating and modifying LUTs, software for working with LUTs, DaVinci Resolve. Practical test with camera (e.g. Sony A7S) and monitor (e.g. Atomos). in KK studio.
  4. ASC CDL, Arri Color Tool - tool for on-set look, import and export of LUT and ASC CDL.
  5. color space ACES and its applications, IDT, LMT, RRT, ODT. Basic ACES workflow
  6. Delivery - Output media preparation, internet TV, digital cinema, basics of DCP mastering - FAMU procedure - ProRes, H264, H265, DCP Master for FAMU presentation.
  7. practical exercise - digital camera test (ARRI, RED, SONY) in camera rental (Panavision) - on-set - camera setup, camera test, monitoring , LUT etc.
  8. practical exercise - evaluation of recorded test, choice of working colour space, colour grading, use of LUT. The processing of the recorded camera test will take place in the FAMU Digital Lab or FAMU Studio or in a professional post-production studio.

Výsledky učení

The aim of the course is to provide students - future cinematographers with an overview of shooting with a digital camera, its basic technical setup, digital post-production and distribution. It focuses on each critical stage of the process, the consistency of color rendering from shooting to the final presentation and distribution of the work.

Students will gain a clearer understanding of the roles of crew members and post-production staff involved in the digital workflow, such as DIT - Digital Imaging Technician , Data Wrangler, Digital Dailies. Technician (dailies department), Assistant Editor, Colourist, vfx Compositor, Final Delivery and Output Quality Control or Digital Cinema Projectionist. It will help them understand their role as a cinematographer in the entire digital workflow process and how to communicate with each other.
