Obsah
The studios of the Department of Photography are the basic form of studio teaching at FAMU. Each studio forms a vertical collective: it is shared by students of all years of Bachelor's and Master's studies, in both Czech and English programs. This structure is deliberate - the natural mixing of years and study programmes creates an environment for the exchange of ideas, topics and experiences, mutual learning and the building of a studio community. Topics are alienated and cleansed of stereotypical approaches and banalities through collaborative critical discussion. Learners broaden their knowledge of global developments in the field through presentations by artists, current exhibitions and notable achievements. Each studio develops its own specific focus and working methods, but shares a common backbone structure of teaching. Studio instruction is devoted to the preparation of an individual art project; the capstone presentation before a committee is a separate course.
In the first semester, students formulate their own interests and first intentions in their work. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, a willingness to accept and reflect on feedback, and a search for a conceptual framework for their own work. Learners join the studio community and gradually get to know its rhythm and way of working.
The backbone structure of the semester:
1-2 / Introduction - short presentations of own work; introduction to the studio focus, aims and programme of the semester; discussion of individual learners' conceptual intentions.
2-4 / Verbalization of intentions - critical discussion, inspirational sources, research context; group and individual consultations.
5-6 / Project specification - finding appropriate means of expression, rehearsal procedures, moodboards, sketches, gathering material; ongoing consultation.
7-8 / Reflection and redefinition - discussion of achievements, addressing gaps, refining techniques and technological solutions for final presentation.
9-10 / Implementation - final work on the project, technical solutions, securing the implementation.
11-12 / Adaptation and presentation - installation in the given space or preparation of another form of presentation; reflection on the process of work; preparation of explication.
Key learning formats (common to all KF studios):
Group critique (min. 2 times per semester): mandatory platform for presentation of work-in-progress and feedback from classmates, peers and teachers.
Individual consultation (min. 1 time per semester, approx. 60 minutes): focused discussion of work in progress, methodology and conceptual issues.
Ongoing studio discussion: each meeting includes a short discussion of ongoing projects - regular feedback to support continuity of work.
Invited guests: artists, scholars and practitioners bring new impulses and open the studio towards wider operation. Form: lecture, workshop or day-long meeting.
Field trip, plein air and excursion: field experience outside the school premises - exhibitions, festivals, art institutions, plein air or thematic study tours.
Sub-assignments: depending on the focus of the studio and the discretion of the instructor, collaborative or individual exercises may be assigned to deepen insight into current issues in the visual arts or to develop specific skills.
Exhibition projects: the studio may, according to its programme, carry out conceptually oriented exhibitions or other forms of presentation of the semester's results.
