Learning outcomes of the course unit
- A better understanding of the particulars of puppet theatre and its diversity and flexibility.
- A glimpse into the development of puppet theatre in comparison to various arts fields, movements and contemporary developmental tendencies.
- Good bearing of the student in existing puppet dramas and drama devoted to puppets. Contemporary production potential of those plays.
- Efforts to broaden student interest in the potential of puppet theatre in figurative and non-figurative theatre.
- Inspiration for studying acting issues.
Mode of study
Lectures, essay and text analyses, creative exercises, classes.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
General knowledge of Czech and world drama, analysis and review skills, sense for drama, creativity, sense of movement in a space.
Course contents
- A historical excursion to types of puppet theatres of the past, epic narrative theatre, split interpretation, illusion and reproduction theatre.
- Technological potential and particulars of individual types of puppets.
- The puppet as an object of ritual and aesthetics.
- Man among objets.
- Relation of the actor to the object.
- The Romance, symbolism and puppet theatre.
- Theatre avant garde and puppet theatre.
- Bauhaus and puppet theatre.
- Puppet drama and plays dedicated to puppets.
- The grotesque and puppet theatre.
- The contemporary development trends in puppet theatre.

Assessment methods and criteria
Credit is awarded based on:
- class/exercise activity,
- completion of the semester paper.
Credit - a semester paper. Overall assessment is comprised of 50 % for class participation and creative exercises, 50 % for completion of the semester paper.
Note
Registration possible only for students in Directing-Dramaturgy, Set-design and Theory and Criticism studies.
