Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student should be, upon completion of the series, able to have a bearing in the issues of modern theatre theory in its entire breadth. The should be able to write on this topic a study or essay and know individual topics and tendencies which arise in modern theatre theory, an not only write in detail and evaluate but to arrange it into a wider cultural and societal context.

Course contents

In the second semester the student encounters theory concepts which develop in parallel with structuralistic concepts of theatre and which have their beginnings in classical German religion and spirituality (particularly in the so called life philsophy of W. Dilthey) and in early Phenomenology. They also encounter theory model topics which are rooted in psychoanalysis.

  1. Phenomenological approach to theatre (Ingarden, Gouhier, Dufrenne, Merleau-Ponty).
  2. Hermeneutika and theatre (Gadamer, W. Ong, Ricoer, N. Frye).
  3. Later Phenomenology and so called the symbolic theory of theatre, including archetypical (Barchelard, Poulet, Ricoeur, Bodkinova, etc.).
  4. Theatre and psycho-analysis (Jung, Durand, Bachelard, Lacan).
