Obsah
This workshop led by Joanna Piotrowska and Peter Watkins will explore the body as a site of performativity, collectivity, and activation. Through a practical, hands-on workshop exploring photography, staging, and embodied experimentation, students will investigate how the body can be used as both subject and medium within a wider artistic research theme of The Body Politic.

Required Readings
●Butler, J. (2011) Bodies that matter: on the discursive limits of “sex”. 2nd edn. London and New York: Routledge.
Butler explores how bodies are shaped and constrained by social norms, arguing that gender and sex are not fixed but performed through repeated actions. The book examines how these performances reinforce or challenge cultural and political norms. This text is useful for understanding performativity, embodiment, and how the body both enacts and resists social expectations.

●Piotrowska, J. (2021) Stable Vices. London: MACK.
●Arendt, H. (1970) On violence. London: Allen Lane.
In this book, Arendt explores the difference between power, authority, and violence, arguing that real political power comes from collective action, not coercion. She examines why violence is often used in politics and protests, and why it can never create true legitimacy. This text is useful for thinking about how bodies, action, and resistance operate within political structures.
●Sealy, M. (2019) Decolonising the camera: photography in racial time. London: Lawrence & Wishart.
Sealy examines how photography has been shaped by colonial histories and racial power dynamics, and how images can reinforce or challenge these structures. The book explores how photographers and audiences can critically engage with representation, identity, and the politics of visibility. This text is useful for understanding how visual culture shapes perceptions of the body, race, and power.
