General information about admission process

Considerable instrumental talent (a prerequisite for the study of the chosen instrument), general musical prerequisites (excellent memory, sense of rhythm, tempo, etc.), musical inventiveness and the ability to reproduce musical styles, good state of health, psychological prerequisites, general sociocultural knowledge.

The basic requirement for admission to the Bachelor?s programme is successful completion of the talent examination.

The repertoire requirements for the talent entrance examination are as follows:

a) one prelude and fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach;

b) two concerto etudes, at least one by Chopin;

c) one movement from a sonata or variation form from the Classical period (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.), separate variations may also be performed (e.g. Beethoven?s 32 Variations), or a separate composition in sonata form;

d) one composition by a distinguished Czech composer of at least three minutes in length, or multiple compositions of no more than eight minutes in combined length;

e) one composition from the Romantic period of the candidate?s choice.

The jury will select four compositions from the required repertoire which the candidate will perform during the examination.The compositions may be played in any order.Performance from memory is a prerequisite for admission.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

The programme does not have any specific requirements for the recognition of prior learning.The procedure for recognition at AMU is governed by Articles 89 and 90 of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 111/1998 Coll., as amended, and by the AMU Attendance and Examination Regulations (Articles 8, 14, 18).

Qualification requirements and regulations

A completed secondary, secondary vocational or higher vocational education and successful passage of the entrance examination are conditions of admission to the programme.In exceptional cases of extraordinary talent, it is possible for a candidate to be admitted to the programme without having completed a secondary education; in such a case, however, he or she is not entitled to receive an academic title upon completion of the Bachelor?s programme.

Regulations:The Czech education system is governed by the Act on Higher Education Institutions, as amended (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.), and by the internal regulations of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Field of study characterization

The programme provides further development of interpretive knowledge and instrumental skills acquired at the previous developmental level.It deepens the student?s artistic and professional orientation in the piano interpretation of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and modern music, and familiarises him or her with the broader interpretive developmental contexts of solo piano playing.Attention is also devoted to chamber music as an essential component of an instrumentalist?s overall development.Also important is the development of methodological and pedagogical experience which forms part of the instructional programme at the Bachelor?s level.

Key learning outcomes

Ability to interpret independently musical works from various stylistic periods on an appropriate artistic and instrumental level.Ability to differentiate and recognise the artistic and interpretive quality of a work heard.Ability to pursue the student?s own further interpretive development based on acquired experience in the field.Ability to formulate in words and ideas his or her artistic and instrumental observations, and to communicate them.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

A graduate of the Bachelor´s programme is able to interpret independently a musical work on a high level and with an appropriate overview of and orientation in various compositional styles;can become actively involved in concert life independently or with partners in chamber music;within the scope of possibility and based on acquired education, can also work in pedagogical activities;is capable of formulating arguments in theoretical and creative discussions on a professional level.

Access to further studies

After completing and duly concluding the Bachelor?s programme by passing the state examination, it is possible for the student to continue his or her studies in the continuing Master?s programme.There are also other possibilities for further education, however, e.g. various domestic and international interpretive courses, internships at foreign schools, interpretive competitions, etc.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Studies are assessed by credits and examinations stipulated by study plans.The student is informed of these through the information system.The student registers for examinations using the information system, and is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination.If neither of these attempts proves successful, the Dean may in exceptional cases permit a fourth attempt (administered by a commission).It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects or to repeat written examinations.The credit is an ungraded form of assessment of studies.It is allocated upon fulfilment of requirements stipulated for individual subjects and is recorded in the information system with the word „Credited“ (Z).An examination is a graded form of assessment of studies, which tests knowledge and level of creativity in the relevant subject.In the main subjects, examinations are administered by a commission. Examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.

Graduation requirements

The Bachelor?s programme is completed by passing a state final examination.This examination is held before an examination committee comprised of the faculty?s professors and assistant professors.

The student must sit for a state final examination no later than two academic years after fulfilling the study obligations of the relevant study plan.A student who has fulfilled the academic requirements of the relevant study plan, performed a Bachelor?s graduation concert, submitted a written thesis with all the required formalities and obtained the required number of credits may register for the state final examination.The actual state final examination is preceded by a commission examination on methodology and pedagogical practice.The state final examination includes a defence of the Bachelor?s graduation concert and the written Bachelor?s thesis.The Dean stipulates the contents of the state final examination for individual fields of study on the basis of the recommendation of the relevant department.

State final examinations are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“.The examination committee shall decide the overall assessment for the state final examination by vote in camera.
