The course contains a detailed analysis of dance steps of the main folklore areas - the method and sequence of teaching the steps, their variations and combinations. The sequence of teaching dance steps, step variations for each stage of folk dance teaching at vocational schools. The method of working with folk dance material and creating exercises for different folklore areas, the approach to teaching folk dances so as to create a creative atmosphere.
The aim of the study is the development of methodical thinking, the ability to analyze the elements of folklore areas, understanding their possible combinations, mastering the procedure of teaching dance steps and dances, mastering the procedure of teaching and independent conducting of Folk Dance lessons. The study deepens the professional understanding of the context in folk dance, its ethnographic inclusion, including within family and annual ceremonies.
The course is closely related to the Folk Dance Pedagogical Seminar and prepares technically and theoretically for mastering folk dance and orientation in ethnographic areas. In three years of study, the student will gradually acquire and deepen his/her knowledge of all the basic elements, variations and dances of the different regions of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.
On the basis of hospitalizations at dance conservatories, ZUŠ and visits to folklore festivals, debates are created, during which students communicate their knowledge to each other, which broadens their professional insight necessary for their future teaching practice and is the basis for the creation of a revival portfolio. Finding and preparing suitable sheet music and working with an accompanist is an integral part of the teaching process, especially when working with material from a particular folklore area, a careful approach is required.
The course includes a visit to a folklore festival of the student's choice, from which the student will produce a report of 1-3 standard pages of text.
Thematic areas:
In the fifth semester it is pedagogy at the intermediate level (children aged 10 - 15 years). Preparation of lessons for this age range.
Students will focus on stylistic differences and repertoire of selected regions, methodical work with more complex steps and dances (mateníky), the student will learn to develop the technique of turning (alone and especially in pairs).
Practice more complex steps and ties at the bar, which translate to working at liberty and into movement from the spot.
The dance steps are combined into larger units, with one combination combining multiple steps into a single unit, which can be found in the descriptions of the dances in the collections.
Students create combinations from the elements and steps of one dance region, trying to see and recognize mistakes in the students, then explain and correct them. Other dance movements, steps and rhythmic elements are added. Topics build on the previous semester:
Sharp springing (preparation for a shaking polka), „Twigs“ by jumping into a squat with extension and closing to the starting position, swings into and out of a wrinkle, Wallachian step in place (with a kneeling, crossed front and back)
Dance variations in space and changes in the direction of movement. Dance steps in movement in space and step links are selected from dances that the students know or are yet to learn.
Dance steps and their motif units are discussed in different options for the direction of movement (circle, diagonal, S-shaped path, arc). Next, the students will learn about the progression of movement in the so-called lighter and heavier directions. The students get to know the rhythmic preparation of students for dances with variable beat (mateníky).
Dance repertoire: Šotyš polka, Dupák, Hulán 2/4 and 3/4, Kalamajka with Maděra, Kohut, Podšable (children's version), Rokycanská, Talián, Jidaš, Sýkorka.
Based on the acquired knowledge, the student creates dance variations for the initial teaching of folk dances, then their regional variations, which they enter, evaluate and analyze.
The students searches for dances of individual areas, for which he then creates movement preparation.
Finding and preparing suitable sheet music is an integral part of the teaching and cooperation with the piano accompaniment.
Students will gradually learn the differences in the performance of individual dance steps from various folklore regions of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student:
- knows how to combine dance steps and their variants into larger units
- understands well the diversity of ethnographic regions, prepares technical exercises for a region of Bohemia
- can independently modify the dances, extend the variants with more complicated movement register
- chooses the correct teaching procedure and sequence of assignments
- can explain footwork and its differences for each area
- has an overview of teaching methods to guide pupils to the movement differentiation of ethnographic areas
- is able to structure a dance lesson correctly, mastering the structured assignment of links and dances
- can analyse the assignment and prepare their own procedure to achieve the desired result
- is able to analyse his/her own work and that of other students, which he/she is able to evaluate professionally, point out shortcomings, see mistakes and highlight positives
- on the basis of the acquired comprehensive knowledge, is able to build a lesson for different age groups, is able to attract different age groups and performance categories
- is able to write his/her own text evaluating the work of a selected folk ensemble

Evaluation methods and criteria
Oral and practical test of practical and theoretical knowledge, presentation of own variations containing the discussed material with didactic connection to their teaching. Seminar work based on a folklore festival (3-5 standard pages).
Other requirements: attendance 80%, activity in teaching, portfolio creation based on workshops and hospitalizations.
