The course Overview of the History of Ballet in Bohemia 2 is a continuation of the course Overview of the History of Ballet in Bohemia 1, which is a prerequisite for enrolment. The course takes the form of an overview lecture dealing with the development of dance in the Czech Republic from the beginning of the 19th century to 1989. Emphasis is placed on the development of theatrical dance and new artistic dance styles in the modern period, which are viewed in the context of other forms of dance and other artistic disciplines. Particular attention is paid to the formation of a specifically Czech theatrical dance culture and its links to the European dance scene, as well as to the relationship between dance culture and other forms of culture in the Czech environment.

The aim of the study is to provide students with knowledge about the place of dance culture in the spectrum of Czech artistic activity, to help them understand the specifics of the historical development of dance art, their causes and consequences for the current situation of dance in the Czech Republic.

Thematic areas:

• Ballet in Bohemia in the Romantic and Post-Romantic periods, the development of ballet on Prague stages (the Estates Theatre), the penetration and acclaim of foreign ballet (guest appearances of Romantic-style performers on Czech stages), the links between the national revival movement and dance and ballet (patriotic balls, the phenomenon of national dances such as the polka, the transfer of national dances to the stage in the work of Johann Raab and other artists); the formation of Czech theatre dance within the Provisional Theatre;
• Ballet in the last third of the 19th century: new conditions for the development of ballet at the National Theatre; the reaction of the Czech environment to the tendencies of ballet at the end of the century; the influence of the Italian school in Bohemia (Excelsior); the development of Czech-German cultural relations; ballet within the Neues deutsches Theater in Prague; theoretical reflection on ballet; efforts to create a purely Czech ballet repertoire in relation to the National Exhibition;
• The period of the early 20th century as a transitional period in the development of artistic dance: the search for new artistic methods - the activities of Achille Viscusi at the National Ballet Theatre in Prague, the penetration of the first manifestations of dance modernism into the Czech environment (guest appearances by I. Duncan, R. St. Denis, Les Ballets Russes by S. Diaghilev, the founding of the Jaques-Dalcroze Society in the period before World War I);
• Artistic dance in the interwar period: formation of ballet companies of newly founded Czech theatres, manifestations of dance modernism in Bohemia, foreign influences, private schools of artistic dance and dance groups, dance art within avant-garde and stone theatres, main personalities, Joe Jenčík.
• Changes in artistic dance after World War II: formation of state education, Soviet influence, the 1960s generation, development of dance art until the end of the 20th century, amateur artistic dance movement, main personalities - Saša Machov, Ivo Váňa Psota, Pavel Šmok, Jiří Kylián, etc.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge of the development of dance culture in the Czech environment in the context of domestic culture and international dance events, developing the volume of knowledge and the ability to put phenomena into context and think critically about them, acquaintance with Czech dance history literature.
