The course takes the form of an overview lecture dealing with the context of art and culture and the development of art in individual periods. It does not attempt to provide an exhaustive factual coverage of the subject matter; the emphasis is on concepts, theoretical/ideological contexts, and characteristic features. In the first block, more general themes focusing on cultural issues and the genesis of art predominate.

The aim of the study is to provide students with knowledge about the place of art in human/European culture, its social context, an overview of the changes in its conceptualization, the interrelationships between different types of art.

Thematic areas:

• Culture and society (basic concepts);
• Man and his development;
• Art as part of human culture; types, genres;
• Origin of art - ceremony, structure of ritual, example of dance ritual - căluş. Discussion of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Programme;
• Art in prehistoric times, visual art and its interpretation;
• The Neolithic city of Çatalhöyük and the religious symbolism of its architecture and art decoration;
• Ancient art and its forms;
• Myth and Epic; Máhábharata as symbolization of religious concepts, its artistic theatrical representation (P. Brook).
• Art of ancient Greece and Rome, the canon of beauty and its reflection in European art („Renaissance“), interpretation of ancient art and its value;
• Culture and art of the Middle Ages. Symbolism of monastic church and cathedral architecture;
• Culture and art of the Middle Ages: laughing culture - carnival and art;
• The art of the Renaissance - the artist as an individual; the revival of the theatre.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Credit - preparation of a written assignment based on the reading of one selected mythological or heroic epic of 3-5 pages; Study of required readings - submission of prepared notes on the texts.
