Learning objective:

The aim is to enable students to take a deeper analytical and critical look at the different phases of Jiří Kylián's choreographic work and its thematic and genre spectrum in the context of historical, cultural, philosophical and aesthetic developments in Europe between 1960 and 2020. The analysis and interpretation of Kylián’s choreographic style is based on systematic study of video-recordings of significant dance works.

Thematic areas:

  1. Early Choreographic Years: the 1960s in Europe and Czechoslovakia, the University Artistic Ensemble and the first choreographic work in the dance department of the Prague Conservatory. London as an open door to the world and to the profession.
  2. In Cranko's footsteps: the experimental period from the first works in Stuttgart to the first guest choreographies in the Netherlands.
  3. The poetic period: choreographies between 1975 and 1985.
  4. The black and white period: revolution in stage lighting, major changes in set and costume design and movement style
  5. Synthetic period: new inspirations, new technologies, new media
  6. Film, drama and writing
  7. Kylian's “narrative” ballets (Stoolgame, Soldier's Tale, The Child and the Spells, Kaguyahime, Tanz-Schul)
  8. The development of the artistic concept of Kylián's productions and his collaborators among artists
  9. From music to sound: the evolution of Kylián's attitude towards the use of music and sound in choreography, from the works of major composers to electronic music, spoken word and original sound design.
  10. Development of movement vocabulary and choreographic texture (specifics of choreographic style, dance duet, perpetual motion effect, dramatic and dramaturgical aspects of Kylián's work)
  11. Collaborators, protégés and followers: Hans van Manen, Mats Ek, Ohad Naharin, Nacho Duato, Martha Clarke, Christopher Bruce, Paul Lightfoot, Lionel Hoche, Patrick Delcroix, Václav Kuneš, Patric Marin and others

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are introduced to the personality of Jiří Kylián in detail and his work is firmly anchored in the general historical context as well as in the context of the development of world choreography in the last third of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. In addition to a deep insight into the distinctive individual aspects of Kylián's work, they are also introduced to its impact on the contemporary conception of dance art in the world and in this country. They further develop their ability to connect historical and theoretical knowledge with the live form of dance and its analytical reflection.

The exam is conducted in oral form (a pre-set topic to be worked on).
