Learning objective:

The aim of the course is to develop dance theoretical thinking. It takes the form of a lecture, which is designed to introduce the basic concepts, problems and methods of sociology and their application to the study of dance. It is primarily concerned with the understanding of dance as social action/conduct/communication and the resulting new perspectives on dance as part of human culture and society. In the first semester, the course includes a historical overview of the development of the understanding of dance as a part of society/culture in the works of sociologists, the problems of establishing the sociology of dance as a specific discipline and its characteristics.

  1. Sociology as a discipline, its historical development and formation, personalities
  2. Sociological concepts and their content, topics and methods of sociological research
  3. Sociology of the body and sociology of art as the basis for the sociology of dance
  4. An overview of sociologically conceived theoretical reflections on dance and the beginnings of the formation of dance sociology
  5. Characteristics of the sociology of dance, specific problems, issues and approaches; Peter Brinson: Scholastic Tasks of a Sociology of Dance; Helen Thomas: Dance, Modernity and Culture
  6. The relationship between dance and music from a sociological perspective

Learning outcomes

Students understand the approaches, theoretical concepts and methods of sociology and their use in the study of dance; expanding theoretical education, developing the ability to critically reflect on dance as a cultural and social phenomenon.
