Learning outcomes of the course unit
Students are introduced to current world documentary pieces which throughout the year are presented at film festivals such as: Berlinale (Germany), CPHDOX (Denmark), Visions du Reel (Switzerland), Cinema du Reel (France), Doucmenta Madrid (Spain), FID Marseille (France), Krakow Film Festival (Poland), YIDFF (Japan), DMZ Docs (South Korea), HotDocs (Canada).
Students participate in class preparations, viewing films and with knowledge about them present them to colleagues, select examples and participate in discussions in class. These are place such that students are only familiarized with individual films but to think about them in a wider context.
Students develop critical thinking in the writing of the final course paper in which are devoted to a selected film or phenomenon.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The aim of the course Contemporary Foreign Documentary Film is to introduce students to the latest works of world documentary films. Direct linking to Czech and world documentary festifals in connection with contemporary potential for sharing audio-visual pieces allows, during the study year, to present exceptional works in documentary film and current trends in foreign television production.
The course does not present selected films at random but selected pieces representative of current creations arranged into a whole which allows for comparison whether capturing topics or various forms of a single genre or diversity using formal processes. Students take part in class preparations, viewing films and studying information about them, and select example and present them to their colleagues. The instructor ensures the selection of films, guarantees familiarization in a wider context and precise information, moderates discussions which depend on the viewed examples and knowledge of other films. Through this approach the student not only is introduced to contemporary films but also can consider them in greater units, finishing the semester with an analytical course paper. It is emphasized that the course works with new films every year, because continuous transparency of world documentary film is its foundation. Therefore, it is opento students in various study years which come together in one course.
Example of topic scope which unites one year: Anidok (animated dokumentary), Found footage, Original essays, Investigative dokumentary, Political film, Artistic protrait, Interaktive dokumentary film, Docusoap, Dokudrama, Scripted reality, Observational dokumentary, etc.

Assessment methods and criteria
- 80% class attendance (60%)
- on-going class preparation: thorough familiarization with selected documentaries, film contextualization, selection and commentary examples with knowledge of critical response (20%)
- partial course paper: analysis of selected films (20%)
