Contents

-What is considered Avantagard and Experimental film and how it developed in the context of traditional art forms? The students will get familiar with the basic movements and technical development of Avant-gard and Experimental film.

-Experimental film of the early 20th century in Europe

-Post WW2 experimental film in Europe, USA and Asia

-Experimental film and it’s impact on mainstream production and commercial production

Films will be screened and analysed with regard to individual technical approaches. Different techniques applicable for the students projects will be discussed.

Learning outcomes

-Students will be encouraged using filming methods and strategies outside the mainstream narrative conventions in their Experiments in the Studio, joint exercise with Documentary Department. At the same time the volume of experimental work they saw and discuss in the course will help them to evaluate their own experiment ideas critically before going into production.

Prerequisites and other requirements

-The CINKK 3 students attending this seminar have already finished the seminar Film Language Essentials and got familiar with traditional narrative system prevailing in the film, television and streaming industry.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The credit will be awarded after completion of cinematographers duties of the Experiment in the Studio excercise.
