The seminar explores the relationship between the perception of reality and the emotional interpretation and representation of that reality through cinematographic lighting.
The primary focus is on brightness, shadow, and colour as fundamental tools for creating the cinematographic image. Other aspects of cinematographic expression—including composition, shot size, camera angle, perspective, depth of field, lens selection, movement within the frame, camera movement and speed, and post-production—are addressed in other seminars.
The lectures examine the physiological and, in particular, psychological aspects of visual perception and their relationship to contemporary audiovisual media. The course considers both traditional photochemical processes and contemporary photoelectronic/digital processes. The resulting theoretical knowledge is intended to develop the professional understanding and visual literacy required of cinematography students.
The lectures are complemented by practical work in a film studio. Each student develops an individual lighting exercise under the supervision of the lecturer.

Learning outcomes
The general aim of the seminar is to develop an understanding of scenic lighting as a means of emotional expression. Students learn to construct lighting concepts that support the emotional impact of a scene, taking into account the technology of image capture and display, the creative intentions of the cinematographer and director, the interpretation of the screenplay, and the overall meaning and atmosphere of the film.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Required seminar attendance: 80%
To receive credit, students must submit the required materials, which must demonstrate that they have understood the lecture material and are able to apply it in practice.
Active participation in the seminar, as well as the accuracy and quality of practical exercises, are prerequisites for receiving a grade.
