Students are invited to explore drawing as a fundamental means of expression in the visual arts. In this course, they will learn the basics of observational drawing using still lifes as examples, focusing primarily on translating a 3D model into a realistic 2D rendering with an emphasis on the observational aspect—that is, the benefits of exploration through empirical experience. We will continue with the experimental use of drawing through several short exercises (drawing with the non-dominant hand, blind drawing, drawing from memory). We will then move on to more advanced drawing techniques (watercolor drawing, ink drawing, dripping drawing, etc.) and conclude the course with unconventional experimental approaches such as embroidery drawing, wire drawing, soldering drawing, light drawing, etc.

Lessons 4–6 – exercises

Lessons 7–9 – advanced drawing techniques

Lessons 10–12 – experimental, unconventional methods

Learning outcomes

Students will master drawing as an important complementary visual art medium. They will develop empirical understanding and representational skills. They will develop motor skills and explore the principles of vision and its translation into a shared form. They will master creative approaches based on combinations of media and will be encouraged to further explore and develop their own methods. They will gain confidence in approaching media as a means of further development.
