This is a unique opportunity to learn about the Hollywood practice of the film sound design profession.

Sound designer Mark Ulano has worked primarily with Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and has won a number of notable awards for his work (including an Oscar for the sound for Titanic).

Sound assistant Patrushkha Mierzwa has already published two books about her profession.

Their collaborative teaching is in demand across film schools worldwide.

The mentoring includes a theoretical and practical part, the whole program will be conducted in English without interpretation.

13:00 - 15:00 Two 50-minute lectures Fundamentals of Sound Art

15:30 - 19:15 Film screening Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2019, 161 min, directed by Quentin Tarantino, sound by Mark Ulano, Wylie Statesman, Michael Minkler, Christian P. Minkler. English with Czech subtitles. Post-film discussion with Mark Ulano and Patrushkha Mierzwa.

Location.

10:00 - 12:30 Lecture: pre-production, this part is focused on a more detailed introduction of pre-production procedures (understanding the project, how to handle the interview with the director, how to break down the script, location scouting, procedures to save time and money, administration (One-liner, Day Out Of Days, Call Sheets, Prelims, shooting schedule), other elements of mise-en-scene, production)

13:30 - 16:00 Lecture: this session details processes for effective problem solving (production meeting, day before shooting, day one, understanding the „Vibe“, how to interpersonal relationships on set, why there are no problems on a big budget film shoot, soft skills)

Tuesday 07. 05. 2024

Location.

09:00 - 12:00 Mixing This part of the teaching module will cover the history of the beginnings of sound, introducing types of recording equipment and the philosophy behind the selection and acquisition of a sound set. The aim is also to prepare practical outputs for the afternoon session.

13:00 - 16:00 Boom Workshop & Wiring Lecture A practical workshop of microphone on a pole and microphone tweaking techniques. How to maintain a healthy back, how to properly follow the action. Attention! Bring your own costumes for porting!

RECOMMENDATION: Attend the program on May 2 and May 3, 2024.
