The aim of this course is to verify that the student has at least a CEFR B2 level of the language of the exam in academic writing, reading and speaking.
This course is compulsory for all AMU post-graduate students. It is meant only for recognition of the required language level (B2) for post-graduate students; it is exam-only (i.e. it has no class participation component).
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will have shown their ability to:
-introduce themselves and their PhD project
-describe the premises, goals, methodologies and current state of this PhD project
-summarize an academic text related to their PhD project, identify its main ideas and present their own point of view of the text’s ideas
Prerequisites and other requirements
Requirements:
-knowledge of the language of the exam at a minimum level B2,
-knowledge of academic language and
-knowledge of the professional terminology of the field of study.

Evaluation methods and criteria
The course is completed by an exam which comprises a written and oral part. Students must sign up for the oral part of the exam in the AMU KOS system min. one month before the exam date.
The oral part of the exam takes place online (MS Teams) before a two-member committee made up by AMU Language Centre tutors.
Before the exam the student must submit the following texts:
- a professional CV (1-3 pages)
- a summary of the PhD dissertation (1-2 pages)
- a professional, original (i.e. not a translated) text in the language of the exam related to the student's area of studies (50 pages)
The materials must be sent as an attachment at least 3 weeks before the date of the exam to the e-mail address: cjp-doktorandi@amu.cz.
The exam includes:
- the presentation of the student based on his/her CV
- discussion of the student’s Ph.D. project
- discussion of the text and its relation to the student’s own Ph.D. project
An MS Teams invitation including the information on the examination committee will be sent out to the students min. one week before the date of the exam by e-mail.
Note
Students are required to have access to stable internet connection, MS Teams application, web camera and microphone.
