Learning outcomes of the course unit

To teach students the basic developmental tendencies of Czech theatre in societal and artistic contexts.

Mode of study

Presentation, screening of relevant audio-visual recordings.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Completion of History of Czech Theatre 1.

Course contents

History of Czech theatre after 1945 in issue lectures. This course focuses on the constitutive tendencies of Czech Theatre in relation to events in Czech society and culture.

  1. Post-war Czech Theatre in the 1950s (Generation 45, Theatre Legislation, Socialist Realism in drama and theatre, Changes in dramaturgy and stage conventions).
  2. Alfred Radok (The beginnings of works, stagings at the National Theatre, City Theatres of Prague, collaboration with Josef Svoboda, the Laterna Magika concept).
  3. Otomar Krejča (The beginnings of acting, The National Theatre artistic program, the founding of the Divadlo Za Branou, collaboration with Josef Svoboda, Karl Kraus, National Theatre drama workshops: M. Kundera, F. Hrubin, J. Topol).
  4. Jan Grossman (activities a Divadlo Na Zábradlí, social appeal of a dramaturgy program, crucial stagings, collaboration with Libor Fára, socio-critical absurd dramas of V. Havel).

Theatre in Czech Culture: Exam information

The Theory and Critique Dept. establishes three regular and two re-take dates.

The exam covers lectures and readings and is only oral.

The student is required to register for one of the three regular dates.

The second re-take is in the presence of two instructors.

A registered student who does not attend nor excuses themself will receive a grade of X.

Students who do not register for any of the regular dates will automatically receive a grade of FX.

If a student does not pass in the regular or the two re-take dates, they may request a dean's exam date which is before a commission.

If a student is not able to attend an exam (only in extenuating circumstances), they are to excuse themselves in writing to the testing instructor at least one day prior:
