Lectures and classes with presentations of the most important set design works from Baroque set design and costuming to the start of modern set design, class paper on a selected topic in the history of set design, searching for source of inspiration and relation of set design to directing.

• Baroque set design, Types of set design of the 19th century.
• Rise of modern set design, inspiration in modern arts directions.
• Avant garde set design - Bauhaus, Russian Constructivism, German expressionism, Italian Futurism, Appia, Craig, Dagilev's ballets.

Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the history of set-design on the European continent, its most important stages and the influence on set-design in the Czech Republic. To acquaint students with methods used in the creation of a setting space and clarify their principles.

Prerequisites and other requirements

Maturita exam, general pre-college knowledge of the history of the fine arts.

75% attendance at lectures and classes, independent creation of the course paper and its presentation (approx. 10 pages of text), oral credit.
