The aim is to acquaint students with the history of theatre (or film) scenography on the European continent, its most important periods and personalities, and its influence on scenography in the Czech Republic. To introduce to the students the methods used in the creation of scenic space and to clarify their principles (technical, architectural, artistic, lighting). An emphasis is placed particularly on avant-garde scenography of the first half of the 20th century, the scenography of the second half of the 20th century, and the Prague Quadrennial 1967-2015 exhibitions.
The themes of the final papers relate to the key stages of the development of scenography and the most significant European personalities of the 1st and 2nd half of the 20th century (expressionism, futurism, cubism, constructivism, functionalism, surrealism) in scenography and visual arts.
Learning outcomes
A graduate of this semester can find relevant literature on the topic, can independently develop a presentation of a historical scenographic phenomenon, and can describe methods of creating scenic space and placing them in a historical era.
