Feedback week is a subject during which the students are required to show their

work in progress, twice each semester, in different phases of research and

rehearsing. And to join all the discussions of all the other students during that week. The main aim of the subject is to teach the students how to work with the

presence of audience, and ways to extract as much information as possible about

the work from this encounter, that should have positive influence on the further

process and product. Feedback as subject also teaches students to give dramaturgical feedback to others. Taking care on bringing up productive feedback that can help the work and move the work forward.

The oral feedback takes place immediately after each showing and consists of three parts: a. what the audience has seen and experienced; b. questions that the student has for the audience and finally c. questions of the audience for the student. This way the response allows the student to hear what the work does, what audience experiences, what is in the work, which is especially valuable in the research-based performance practice where there is no exact models to follow but most of the work is experimenting in the dark.

It is compulsory for students to show work during the 2 Feedback weeks that take place in semester 1, 2, 3 and 4. First showing is considered mapping of a direction (content, form, relation to audience) and the second showing is considering the refining of this direction.

Feedback weeks aim to provide a space for students to understand how their performance works - how the audience perceives it, what they experience, what is visible and what needs to be strengthened. This is highly necessary in the forms of theatre that we make in the program and that are abstract, audience related and new in form.

Responding students are invited to follow their perception while watching the performances and to report on what they experienced. This is a dramaturgical exercise and not critical, so judgment and emotions should be controlled. For more content and instructions see Feedback booklet.

Before each Feedback there is an Introduction and Evaluation sessions for the 1st and 2nd year together. This introduction session will provide the students with basic rules of the feedback as well give other strategies on how to give and receive feedback. Discussion about what productive dialogue is.

All events of the Feedback Week are compulsory for the students of the first and second year of MA DOT (students enrolled in Feedback courses 204MDFW1, 204MDFW2, 204MDFW3 and 204MDFW4). Credits are given based on attendance and engagement.

Supervisors of individual projects are required to see the project they were assigned and to join the feedback dialogue publicly.

The moderator of the feedback and the course leader will always be present, too, as well as invited feedback guests.

Students of the 3rd year, teachers of MA DOT (including alumni moderators of feedback weeks) and team members of individual projects are very welcome to the feedback week, but not obliged to attend. Please reserve your spot in the schedule of the feedback. Other DAMU teachers, alumni, and all outside friends and audiences - please contact the administration to reserve a spot as we have a limited number of places per project. We have to limit the public access to feedback to maintain safe pedagogical space with specific types of dialogue. Please reserve your spot in the schedule of the feedback sent by email.

Learning outcomes

The student is able to choose and use a suitable way of receiving feedback from the audience and using it for further creative work. Understanding how to ´translate´ what the spectators are saying into productive dramaturgical steps.

The student is able to give feedback to others with an emphasis on the dramaturgical aspects of the work and its formability for creative processes, understanding how to speak to people in order to be heard and how to speak in order to provide dynamics to the dialogue.

Prerequisites and other requirements

Feedback weeks 2: In the second semester, students show the first phase in their

research, they try new formats, ways of relating to the audience, or a topic.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Attendance at all presentations and discussions in these weeks is mandatory, but at least 80% attendance is required to obtain credit. Introduction and evaluation sessions before and after each feedback are mandatory. In the first semester, students do not show their own work but are obliged to see all presentations and participate in all the discussions.
