Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are introduced to the basics of copyright and other related legislation. They know fundamental obligations and artist's rights.

Students are introduced to the basic types of contracts and legal institutions regarding authorial activities. They know what the obligations of OSVČ, how to found a production company and resolve other practical life situations.

Course contents

Course description:

The course aim is to introduce students to the basics of copyright and basic of other regulations. Knowledge of them is essential for original creations, and entreprenurial and documentary maker's work activities. Students - future documentarists should, this way, be prepared for legal situations which they may encounter during the performance o their profession.

Topic scope:

Instruction is set in three 4 hour blocks; each comprising a three-hour lecture + 1 hour of discussion of practical issues.

The first block is focuses on copyright (artist's rights, performing artists, film producers, exceptions of legal protection, basic principles of collective management, etc.) and other related institution of intellectual rights (trademark, licensing and general contracts, etc.)

The second block will be devoted to other legal regulations in media important for documentarists (personal protections, unfair competition and basic principles of concluding and fulfilling contracts according to civil code, legislation on audio-visual and other media laws, laws on advertisement regulation, etc.).

The third block is devoted to topic for companies (types of commercial companies, basic commercial companies, obligations arising from the law for owners and representatives of commercial companies, etc.), entreprenurial activity and at the same time, basics of the labor code (among others, for differentiating situations when it is a black market system and when it is legal freelancing.).
