Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students adopt the basics of drawing focused on depicting a space and application of drawing skills in the cameraman preparations for shooting. An additional aim of the drawing exercises is to develop the personal approach to the creative treatment of the film and to learn to conscientiously join in the work with space and the rhythm of the film image, and considerations of the camera's image language.

Course contents

  1. Basics of depicting perspective

Supplemental exercises, optional:

  1. human figure, its proportions and placement in a space, orientation in a space in preparing a screenplay

Supplemental exercises, optional:

  1. Various concepts of depicting a space and their emotional effect
  1. light and shadow, atmospheric perspective, sfumato and bleeding

Supplemental exercises, optional:

  1. rhythm of the image language, musical rhythm and mutual influences in film

Assessment methods and criteria

The basis for grading is 5 submitted drawing exercises on an assigned topic and at least 75% attendance

Students adopt the basics of drawing focused on depicting a space and application of drawing skills in the cameraman preparations for shooting. An additional aim of the drawing exercises is to develop the personal approach to the creative treatment of the film and to learn to conscientiously join in the work with space and the rhythm of the film image, and considerations of the camera's image language.

In the first class student are introduced to the basics of depicting perspectives. An additional topic will be the human figure, its proportions and placement in a space. Following this will be exercises in which the students will apply drawing skills for expressing various film situations. They will investigate the effects of diverse visual approaches to a space and the potential for their use in accordance with the overal intention of the final film. Another exercise will be focused on working with lighting and the atmospheric illusion of a space. The final topic will be the rhythm of the image language, relationship between the image narrative and musical theme and musical inspirations for creating the viusal concept of the film.

The aim of this course is focused on drawing but not for every student to become and excellent drawing artist, but this course is for each to discover their drawing potential and guide it to its best use for thinking about the visual concept of a film and the preparation of the technical script. As well the drawing classes are to be a space for investigating one's own approach to the creative concept of a film.
