Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course aim is to introduce students with the physical fundamentals of the study and practical examples of completed assignements. As well students will adopt potential and manners of the Photography Dept's technical equipment use including potential comparisons of results acquired through analog and digital technology.

Mode of study

Course Description, Assignments: (exercise 1P1)

  1. Day and artificial lighting, types of lights, basic principles, potential changes in character and light management. Advantages of individual systems.
  2. Basic exponometry, photometric units, various types of measuring equipment - advantages and manners of measurement and management, set brightness extent, exponometry tools.
  3. Basic types of photographic equipment, their construction, advantages and use. Practical - with Sinar camera, development.

1 reproduction underglass with grey and color scales - examples of color transfer to B/W scales, defined proper exposure and example of the development process for 6x9cm. (1 enlargement to 24x30cm)

  1. Lens construction and their defects, resolution. Practical: extreme potential of school lenses, field of vision, basic resolution ability tests.

1 photograph of the structure of an object surface with a verification of the Scheimpflug film development principle - 9x12cm. (1 enlargement 30x40cm)

  1. Perspective and focal distance, vertical balance - restitution, establishing the lighting extent of a scene in the studio.

Practical: 2 photographs of compositions of a geometric object with various lighting and perspective in one with the use of restitution. (2 enlargements 30x40cm)

  1. Work with Sinar camera and digital background Sinarback 54H, digital camera, possible uses, comparison of digital and analog photography results.

Practical: the subsequent exercises is always a current comparison of the two technologies in relation to the Working with a Computer exercise and digital imaging.

  1. Technical fundamentals of photographing glass, potential lighting, material use.

Course description, theory section:

  1. Basic characteristics of light

What is light, lightwaves and its characteristics, components describing periodic waves, electromagnetic radiation, light-speed.

  1. Basic geometric optics, reflection, total reflection, movement, dispersion.
  2. mirrors and lenses, Spherical mirrors, spherical and aspheric lenses, defects.
  3. Wave optics, interference, diffraction, resolution of a given diffraction, polarization, 3D imaging
  4. Camera, focal distance, sharpness depth, types of lenses, exposimeter, exposition
  5. The human eye and visual perception, focusing and accommodation, iris, lens, retina, sensitivity, defects, light perception, binocular sight, 3D, 2D
  6. Colors, Spectral colors, additive and subtractive color mixture, color perception, chromatic warmth
  7. Digital image, image data, resolution, CCD and CMOS chips, image processing, display, optical saving of data, holographic memory, the future of photonics.
  8. Light and modern physics, particles and waves, the atomic spectrum, stimulated emissions; laser, LED, OLED

Course contents

The course objective is to introduce students to both the physical principles of the field and practical examples of solutions to specific tasks. At the same time they learn to use technical equipment at the Photography Department, including the opportunity to compare results using analog and digital technology.

Assessment methods and criteria

Grading: Winter semester: awarded based on a test in theory knowledge and grading of the submitted exercises in which how closely the assignment was maintained, and in quality.

Summer semester exam: test and interview, grading of submitted exercises, in which how closely the assignment was maintained, and in quality.

Attendance: a requirement for student grading is a required attendance of 80% of lectures.
