An often overlooked part of the directors work is their „translation” of the narrative that has been written it the screenplay format into a full-bodied living expression of the story. This part of the directors work is far more than putting the text into pictures, rather it is a deep and nuance process which deals with everything from the broad thematical concepts that the director sees in the screenplay to filling in the nuances of acting, imagery and sounds that are in-between the lines. The end goal being an artistically rich living expression of abstract ideas and the functional words from the page.

The purpose of this class will be to go through the directors process from the moment of receiving a finished screenplay up until the work on set. This means a close reading of a screenplay which has not been written by the director, finding their own story within it and translating it into actionable moments that work as individual elements but also as a part of an overarching story being told. It will also go through the visual choices that a director can and has to make, both in terms of artistic aspirations as well and the realities of shooting. Then it will touch upon the practical matters of choosing a location and casting, ending up with the preparations that are required of a director right before going on set, as well as the work they need to do when they are there, including on-set etiquette.
