The module is meant to introduce students to the requirements for their master’s degree thesis, the resources available for their research, and assist them in beginning to conceptualize possible thesis topics.
Module Schedule:
- Introduction to essential requirements for master’s degree theses at AMU.
- Variety of Sample Theses previously defended at FAMU are shown and described.
- Discussion of Possible Topics.
- Introduction of databases.
- Introduction of specialized journals.
- Exercise in developing a research question (using EBSCO).
- Sharing and discussion of results.
- Overview of future thesis courses/scheduling for timely completion of the work.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion, students should be able to:
- Recognize the essential and specific requirements of a master’s degree thesis written on film for AMU.
- Know the problematics involved in researching a thesis topic in film.
- Become aware of databases related to film research.
- Become aware of specialized journals related to film.
- Practice using internet searches to develop a topic into research question.
- Consider individual areas of interest for further research.
- Plan for the timely completion of their thesis.
Prerequisites and other requirements
Familiarity with academic writing; excellent command of English language, access to databases available to FAMU students (JSTOR, EBSCO).
Students are required to bring fully charged, wifi-connected laptops to the module for research exercises. They should have WORD installed on the laptop and access to KOS.

Attendance is mandatory. The subject will be credited (pass assessment) upon completion of the exercise.
