Historical development of the graphic method of dance notation (movement): Survey of existing notation systems, from the oldest notes using letter abbreviations (Marketa Rakouská manuscript, around 1450) to the development of systems using special graphic markings. Notation systems in historical development. Efforts to establish a functional system of dance notation at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Discussions over the purpose of dance notation, particularly in relation to film recording.

Types of dance notation: notation using letter abbreviations. Notation derived from music notation. Using modified music note markings. Methods based on figurative principles. Methods using special graphic marking systems (Beauchamps-Feuillet notation, Laban's Kinetography).

Rise and development of Laban's Kinetography, its reception in the world and Bohemia. Historical conditions for the rise of Laban's notation method. Relations between his artistic and theory activities. Genesis and development phases of methods and manners of spreading. Differences between the European and American branches of Laban's notation. Manners of use (etnochoreology, notation of choreographies). Reception of methods in Bohemia (Gret Eppinger, Milča Mayerová; The situation after the Second World War - Eva Kroeschlová).

Basic kinetography principles:

a. prostor analysis as the foundation of the method, description of the kinesphere, basic directions of movement and inter-directions, level of movement. Direction markings. The kinetogram and its divisions;

b. Basic quality of movement - direction, length of duration, level and its notation in the direction marking

c. notation of individual elements of movement: moving place (weight change, changes in weight placement),gesture of the hand and leg, jumps, movements of the upper part of the body, various forms of turning, movement in a circular path.

Instruction in the basic principles of kinetography takes place in practice classes, focused on reading kinetograms (kinetographic etudes) and their movement reconstruction. In this manner they can form the idea hidden behind the markings and will be possible to reach relative alacrity in sight-reading notation.

Learning outcomes

The course objective is to introduce students to Laban's dance notation principles, from both a theory and a dance score reading practice perspective as well as notating dance.

During the semester preparations at home and practice and completion of assignments (creation and notation of a movement etude) are required. Credit awarding is based on completion of assignments, class participation, cinema theory and journal quizzes and reading and movement executed from kinetograms.
