Learning objective:
This is a specialised lecture designed for the summer semester of the first year of study, which is a continuation of the methodologically oriented course Research and Publication Methods. Students will learn to relate the theoretical knowledge from reading professional texts to their own artistic production and scientific work. The lectures of the instructor will be combined with seminar discussions on the texts discussed.
Thematic areas:
In the course Critical Reading of a Professional Text, important chapters from the writings of authors relevant to contemporary thinking and theoretical reflection on art will be selected for analysis. These texts may not only be texts on music, but also texts in philosophy or social sciences. The course should thus lead students to become aware of interdisciplinary intersections and relationships or to explore new paradigms of thought. During the lecture, one author/text will be discussed at a time (e.g. Adorno, Cage, Deleuze/Guattari, Eco, Foucault, Kuhn...); the aim will be to present its thought context, to introduce the concepts and terms used by the author and then to try to relate them to the musical field or to the compositional or scientific work of the students. In working with and discussing the text, students will be encouraged to actively reflect on the paradigm of thought under discussion. The selection of texts listed in the section Study Literature and Study Aids is rather indicative; specific texts will be chosen in relation to the topics of the dissertations and the students' professional focus.
