17:00 – 20:30 Performative reading session named Flickering Migrations, screening of a video essay Dog Star Descending, Masterclass moderated by Jennifer Ann Helia Defelice

In a performative reading session, Aykan Safoğlu will present his artistic research, taking his solo exhibition Teneffüs [Recess] (Salt Galata, Istanbul, 2022) as a point of departure.

Turning to his former Turkish-German high school, Istanbul High School for Boys, housed in the former Ottoman Public Debt Administration, Safoğlu artistically explores how histories of debt, labor, migration, and citizenship have shaped German-Turkish relations. Drawing on Affect Theory, Black Studies, and Critical Migration Studies, he connects intergovernmental agreements with familial histories of migration and conversion, while moving between techniques of still and moving image (re-)production.

The master class will conclude with a screening of his video essay Hundsstern steigt ab [Dog Star Descending], originally presented as part of Teneffüs.

The event will be in English without translation.

Literature

Aykan Safoğlu stages transdisciplinary narrations where his longings, dreams, and contradictions challenge historical time. Navigating still, moving, and performative images, Safoğlu makes intimate memory work that defies media conventions. His hybrid artistic forms move, fragment, and reflect ontological questions in photography, film, and performance.

After obtaining his BA in Film and TV from the Istanbul Bilgi University (TR, 2007), the artist received his MA in Art in Context from the Berlin University of the Arts (DE, 2010) and his MFA in Photography from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College (US, 2014). Recipient of the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen at the 59th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2013) and the Birgit Jürgenssen Prize (2021), Safoğlu holds a PhD in Practice from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (AT, 2025). The artist lives and works in Vienna.
