How to create compelling, truthful and engaging narratives about a world facing an environmental crisis? For a long time, environmental issues in audiovisual have only been portrayed in the context of post-apocalyptic narratives. Are there other possibilities? How can climate and environmental crisis be thematized across genres- romcom, action blockbuster, detective story, reality show, or sports broadcast? The module will look at the portrayal of environmental themes on the big screen, how these themes have been portrayed in the past, what the trends are in major audiovisual productions such as the BBC and Netflix today, or what recommendations are based on data and academic research. There will also be a series of exercises at the practical level where we will try to put our newly acquired knowledge into practice. The teaching model will be guided by Futerra's Creative Director (working with COP or BBC) and screenwriter, documentary filmmaker and director Andrea Culkova.
Teaching:
William Patterson, Futerra
Andrea Culkova, ARAS
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the module will have a basic overview of the forms of depiction of climate and environmental issues in audiovisual production. They will be oriented to the possibilities and trends of thematising these issues across formats. Finally, they will try out for themselves techniques and exercises that will illuminate how to put findings from research on audience perceptions of environmental issues into practice.
