Literature

BIO speaker

Gunnar Hall Jensen's work is one of the most distinctive experimental voices in Scandinavian documentary. In his loose series of films, Hall Jensen embarks on an uncompromising exploration of the dark, intimate and often disturbing corners of the human psyche. Through a brutally honest, self-revealing style, he creates a long-term film diary that captures personal crises, losses, the shape of masculinity and the transformation of his own identity. One World will present his evocative trilogy Gunnar Goes Comfortable (2003), Gunnar Goes God (2010) and Portrait of a Confused Father (2025). The retrospective will highlight the continuity of his work and the timelessness of the themes he pioneered in documentary film.

Gunnar Hall Jensen is a Norwegian documentary film director and screenwriter. A graduate of the University of Bergen, he began his career in television, short films and advertising work. His debut Gunnar Goes Comfortable (2003) was selected for the competition sections of several festivals, including Amsterdam's IDFA. Since then he has continued his free documentary series charting different stages of life and related themes and issues - personal crises, relationships, sexuality, images of masculinity, fatherhood, grief. Films such as Gunnar Goes God (2010), A Cup of Tea (2014), and most recently Portrait of a Confused Father (2025) have been screened at international festivals such as CPH:DOX, Bel Docs, Millennium Docs Against Gravity, Ji.hlava, Zagreb DOX, and DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in South Korea, and have won several awards (e.g. Camera Award at Nordic/Docs Documentary Film Festival, Special Mention New Vision Award at CPH:DOX, etc.).
