A masterclass with cinematographer and director Fred Kelemen focusing on choreographed long takes and their mise-en-scene.

Date: 13. 11. 2025

Venue: FAMU, Screening Room, Lažanský palác, 1st floor, Smetanovo nábřeží 2

Time: 10:15 - 13:00

According to Google AI, the average length of one shot in a feature film today is 2 to 5 seconds. The first shot of Frost of Fred Kelemen lasts 7 minutes and 20 seconds. The second and third shots aren't much shorter.

This talk will focus on long - or, as Fred prefers to call them, choreographed - takes. How do you work with in-frame montage, mise-en-scène, time and rhythm in them? How to navigate the energy fields of the flow of scenes in relation to content, emotional and atmospheric reality? What is the importance of the dramaturgy of a single shot for the whole of a film built on long takes? And why do some filmmakers choose to narrate in this way - what do they achieve by doing so? Fred Kelemen will answer these and other questions based on his more than 30 years of experience as a director, cinematographer and screenwriter. Fred Kelemen is also known for his work as a cinematographer with Béla Tarr and others. He has worked as a cinematographer on films such as The Turin Horse and The Man from London.

During the lecture, students will also have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss relevant topics with the filmmaker.

The lecture will be in English, with moderation.
