This is a unique opportunity to learn about the Hollywood practice of the film sound design profession.

Mark Ulano is a sound engineer creating the artistic sound side of film works. He has worked primarily with Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, and has won many notable awards for his work, including an Academy Award for his sound for Titanic.

Patrushkha Mierzwa is one of the founders of the sound assistant profession, about which she has also published two books.

Workshop, The program will be held in English without interpretation.

10:00 - 13:00 Mixing This class gives a true history of the beginnings of sound, introduces types of recording equipment and the philosophy behind the selection and acquisition of a working package. The aim is also to prepare practical outputs for the afternoon session.

14:00 - 17:00 Boom Workshop & Wiring Lecture

A hands-on workshop of microphone-on-a-stick techniques and microport tweaking. How to maintain a healthy back, how to properly follow the action. Attention! Bring your own costumes for porting!

09.00 - 12:00 Storytelling with Sound

A three-hour interactive lecture on the connection between sound and the emotional content of a story.

13:00 - 15:00 Two 50-minute lectures Fundamentals of Sound Art

On the work of the post production sound engineer (production mixer), microphone technician (1st AS) and Utility Sound Technician (2nd AS).

15:30 - approx. 19:30 Film screening of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2019, 161 min, directed by Quentin Tarantino, sound by Mark Ulano, Wylie Statesman, Michael Minkler, Christian P. Minkler. English with Czech subtitles. Post-film discussion with Mark Ulano and Patrushkha Mierzwa, moderated by Martin Styblo.

Venue: U1, FAMU, Smetanovo nábřeží 2

10:00 - 12:30 Lecture: pre-production, this part is focused on a more detailed introduction of pre-production procedures (understanding the project, how to handle the interview with the director, how to break down the script, location scouting, procedures to save time and money, administration (One-liner, Day Out Of Days, Call Sheets, Prelims, shooting schedule), other elements of mise-en-scene, production)

13:30 - 16:00 Lecture: this session details processes for effective problem solving (production meeting, day before shooting, day one, understanding the „Vibe“, how to interpersonal relationships on set, why there are no problems on a big budget film shoot, soft skills)

15:00 - approx. 19:30 film screening Killers of the Blossoming Moon, 2023, 206 min, directed by Martin Scorsese, sound by Tom Fleischman, Mark Ulano. In English with Czech subtitles. Debate with Mark Ulano and Patrushkha Mierzwa after the film, moderated by Martin Ozvold.
