3rd DAY, SATURDAY 20/04/2024
Venue:: Studio FAMU, Klimentská 4, Praha 1
Time schedule: 10:00 - 20:00 workshop
„Oxberry : a tool of trickery in film and artistic film imagery“
Practical workshop on optical film printer (16mm)
(limited capacity: 7 students)
Students familiar with contemporary experimental filmmaking (see the 2 previous days of mentoring by N. Rey) will have the opportunity to get hands-on with the optical film printer, which has an irreplaceable place in the history of cinema, both major and alternative, and is increasingly to be found in artist-run film labs. In the basic manipulation the original image will be multiplied, layered, recomposed, etc. The resulting tests will be developed and projected together.
In English without interpreting.
Learning outcomes
French filmmaker Nicolas Rey will introduce the students to the scene of independent artist-run film labs. They will learn about the possibilities of working in the medium of photochemical and optomechanical film on an international scale. Through two blocks of screenings from film prints (16mm, 35mm) and one feature film by Nicolas Rey (16mm), students will experience a variety of non-standard ways of expressing themselves through images and thinking materially: in and through matter.
Pre-registered Masters and PhD students will also have a hands-on workshop with the legendary Oxberry optical film duplicator, where they will transfer film from the original medium and transform it. The workshop also includes developing film material.
Prerequisites and other requirements
Participation in Alexander Larose mentoring is an advantage but not a requirement.
