Learning objectives:
The course includes analytical and practical elements. In the first part, the student is introduced to the major sonata (mainly piano, but also symphonic) works of high and late Classicism (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart and L. van Beethoven) and works of Early Romanticism (songs by F. Schubert and R. Schumann, piano miniature by F. Chopin, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and R. Schumann). Through analyses, the basic stylistic compositional principles of the given formal types are explained. Attention is particularly paid to formal and harmonic work within the construction of the sonata form and to melodic, harmonic and formal compositional practices within the style of Schubert song and the early Romantic piano miniature. In the practical part, the student applies the acquired knowledge in his/her own compositional studies of the discussed areas.
Thematic areas:
- Sonata form of high and late Classicism (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven)
- Song of early Romanticism (F. Schubert, R. Schumann)
- Piano Miniature of Early Romanticism (F. Chopin, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, R. Schumann)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student knows the major instrumental works of the high Classical period within the given forms and masters their stylistic compositional principles. The student is able to independently analyse simple and more complex sonatas, songs and piano miniatures and create his/her own studies appropriate to each area while maintaining stylistic clarity and musical persuasiveness within the style.
