The workshop „alchemic laboratory“ on the theme of wild solarization of the film image (flat prints), led by renowned French experimental filmmaker Gaëlle Rouard, will reveal to students the artistic potential of contact copying of film strips and the manipulation and transformation of the original image on film. They will learn about possible interventions in the development process and their impact on the aesthetic presentation of the image. The developed parts of the films will be projected as loops that can serve as the basis for a film performance. Previous experience with a photographic chamber or film developing is welcome but not a prerequisite for participation.

Dates of the event: 18 - 19 October 2024, 10:00 - 18:00

Venue: to be determined

Language of instruction: English

Learning outcomes

Students will experience working with film material as a material artistic raw material. In a playful and experimental way they will gain direct experience with photochemical images. Thus, they will get acquainted with the moving image film laboratory, the principle of film duplication and the basics of projection from a film projector as a tool.

Prerequisites and other requirements

On Monday 14 October at 8pm Gaëlle Rouard will screen her latest feature film DARKNESS, DARKNESS BURNING BRIGHT (2020, 16mm, 70min) at Alfred ve dvoře in Prague.

Biography of the lecturer:

Gaëlle Rouard (1971, France) is a filmmaker, alchemist and performer. She has been making handmade films since the early 1990s, focusing on the film laboratory in non-industrial conditions. She is a long-time member of Le 102, rue d'Alembert, a place dedicated to the dissemination and production of experimental music and film. For twelve years, until 2006, Rouard ran Atelier MTK, a film lab in Grenoble dedicated to do-it-yourself approaches, and was instrumental in the creation of a whole network of artist-run film labs that today represent the contemporary scene of experimental material film. Rouard develops and explores various methods of chemical film processing, sharing his knowledge through workshops in contexts ranging from art schools to individual teaching. In his performances around the world, he experiments with the possibilities of live multi-projection, both in collaboration with different people and in solo performances. Her work has been screened on various screens around the world, including at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Syros International Film Festival, the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and many others.
