This talk will be hosted by Chihyu Lin, a student in FAMU’s directing master‘s degree. Focus on the starting point of director Tsai Ming-Liang’s slow cinematic filmmaking, his screenwriting and acting experience, and the style changes over the years. Taking „Goodbye, Dragon Inn“ as an example, we will discuss the gaze and the passage of time in the narrative, the depiction of female protagonists, and how the director thinks about the challenges to the current film ecosystem, including film festival classifications, the boundaries of different audiovisual art forms, and the director’s attempts at cross-platform and multimedia.
17:00-18:00 masterclass Tsai Ming-liang: Ground Zero of Serendipity: Tsai Ming-Liang's Slow Cinematic Craft, moderated by Michelle Tseng
This masterclass is hosted by Michelle Tseng, a graduate of the FAMU Editing Master's program. The discussion will focus on Director Tsai Ming-Liang's views on storytelling, exploring how he approaches the rhythm of life and perceives fragments of occasion during his creative process. We hope this session will offer FAMU students a deeper understanding of Director Tsai's pursuit of „handcrafted“ cinema and provide insights into how he patiently uses narrative techniques to express his perception of time.
Masterclass will be simultaneously interpreted into English only.
