Michael is an Emmy award-winning editor (three times nominated) and edit consultant working on feature doc-umentaries for 20 years. Recent credits include the docu-series, „Heart of Invictus“ (Netflix) and „Name Me Lawand“ which won the Jury Prize at Hot Docs 2023 for Best International Feature (and now screening at DOC NYC). His experience in the cutting rooms began working in drama with Ridley Scott, Andrea Arnold (Red Road, Fish Tank) and Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart, 24-Hour Party People, Wonderland) where he learned invaluable and varying approaches to editing from assisting some of the best editors in the world.

Michael proposes to run a week's workshop at FAMU where participants will work with raw material from last year's BAFTA-nominated „Rebellion“ to edit their own version of scenes, in order to discuss the balance of dy-namic editing whilst keeping objective to your subject. And open Q&A screening and lectures for the whole school.

On Tuesday, January 9 at 10 am (editing department), Michael will deliver talks on three key areas of editing;

  1. „Don't respect the footage“ how to stay fresh to the material and to keep objective throughout the edit.
  2. „What makes a good cut point?“ looking out different approaches to editing from rhythm, camera movement, character development and story momentum.
  3. „Creating atmosphere“ sound editing and how to stay ahead of your audience.

On Wednesday, January 10 at 6 pm ( Screening Room) Michael will also host a Q&A screening of „The Nightcrawlers“ (Emmy winner for Outstanding Documentary Short) filmed in The Philippines with unprecedented access to both the killers and the photojournalists attempting to expose President Duterte's horrific "War on Drugs“.
